Welcome to Guadeloupe Island Hotels, Resorts, and Lodging!
A bouncing butterfly lands in the midst of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, spreading its wings out over both bodies of water. That’s what Guadeloupe looks like when you view it from a map. The island ranges from dense, tropical rain forests to sun-drenched, white, sandy, beaches. Visitors to Guadeloupe will find the French Territory’s topography as diverse its people. The first residents of the island group were the Carib Indians who called Guadeloupe, “Karukera” or “Isle of Beautiful Waters.” Today’s residents are of African, French, and East and West Indian backgrounds, although Guadeloupe is considered to be the center of Creole culture. Guadeloupe itself is an archipelago made up of two large islands Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. The Riviére Salée separates the islands. There are also smaller islands in Guadeloupe including: Terre de Haut, Iles des Saintes, La Désirade, and Marie-Galante. A total of nine islands make up Guadeloupe. Most tourists stay on the two large islands, but sometimes venture out to the smaller islands. Guadeloupe Hotels accommodations can vary. You could relish in Guadeloupe hotels and resorts, or get a glimpse of rural West Indian life on the smaller, less populated islands.

Visiting Guadeloupe
Although you are on an island nation in the Caribbean, you will have the opportunity to dine on world-class, European cuisine. Many of the Guadeloupean chefs were trained in Paris, so prepare to indulge in rich, creamy sauces with fragrant, French wines. The diversity of the islands’ people means you will have an array of tastes to satisfy your palate. You can have everything from pizza to Caribbean lobster to curry dishes. If shopping is what you like, then you will fawn over the possibility to get French, designer clothing with as much as a 20 percent discount. While some workers at internationally- owned hotels and resorts speak English, most people do not. Make sure you carry along a French phrases book. Most people in Guadeloupe speak French. A lot of the islands’ inhabitants also speak patois. Even if your français isn’t the best, your attempt to speak it is usually appreciated. While you learn the language, make sure to be considerate of other cultural nuances. In Guadeloupe, it is considered impolite to take someone’s picture without permission. Ask first, and don’t be surprised if someone says no. Also, if you want to go into urban areas after relaxing at the beach, make sure to change out of your beachwear. You could offend Guadeloupeans by wearing beach attire/short-shorts off the beach. While formal attire is necessary when attending high-end restaurants and events, your best bet is to dress cool because of the island’s climate. The average temperatures are in the 70s and 80s from November to May. If you are going to visit the mountainous regions at night, make sure you pack a light jacket or sweater. Another interesting note, Guadeloupe uses the military standard in telling time.
